A root called Astragales is the same root as the one used to make chaga, according to the Astragale Research Institute.
The two have different chemical names.
“Both the AstraGales and the chaga are actually the same species,” Dr Paul Hickey, the institute’s head of research, said.

Dr Hickey said chagas root was used to create some chaga varieties.
The institute was able to confirm this by studying a plant called anastragales.
It contains two species of the plant that can be distinguished from each other by the appearance of their leaves, and by a distinctive shape of the leaves.
Dr Andrew Dutton, a plant scientist at the University of Queensland, said the plant could be used as a seed.
“It has two distinct forms, and it is a relatively common plant.
It is a pretty good source of pollen for some plant species,” he said.
Dr Dutton said there were several other plants that contained chaga or chaga-like materials, and some of them were used in medicine.
The chaga species are known as Astragelas and the astraGale has a chagasea structure that is similar to that of AstraGalas chaga cells.
Both of these are known to have been used to produce some astraGalaxae varieties, he said, but there was no way to tell what the different names were for the plant.
Dr Vicky Linton, an astrobiologist at the National University of Singapore, said there was also no way of telling the differences between the two species.
“What we are trying to do is determine if they are related or if they have a common ancestor that gave rise to one or both species,” she said.
The plant, which is native to the Americas, was used as an important ingredient in the manufacture of the Chinese medicinal teas of the 1800s, and later in the use of the spice of cayenne pepper in the Americas.
But the discovery of Astragels roots has attracted renewed interest as they are found in a variety of different plants.
Dr Linton said there is a “potential for some interesting medicinal uses of the root” in the future.
“Some of the astral species are used in the creation of medicinal plants,” she explained.
